Mourinho says Vinicius Junior remains vital despite Yan Diomande’s form

Jose Mourinho has rejected the idea that Real Madrid are better balanced without Vinicius Junior, while making clear that the Brazilian’s importance does not guarantee him a place in the starting XI.

Vinicius Junior remains suspended for Real Madrid’s next two matches, although he could be cleared to return against Celta Vigo on 21 November. Whether Mourinho selects him immediately remains uncertain, with Yan Diomande having impressed in the same position in recent weeks.

The summer signing has produced a series of excellent performances, particularly in his defensive work. The Ivorian is currently offering Real Madrid more in that area than Vinicius Junior, creating a selection dilemma for Mourinho after the international break.

The issue was raised with Mourinho on Saturday before Real Madrid’s victory over Santander. He was asked whether his side looked more balanced without Vinicius Junior in the starting line-up.

“No, I see a team that works hard to be balanced in every situation,” Mourinho said.

“Offensively, defensively, with the ball, without the ball… I always see that. Vini is a great player and we need him. But when I say that we need him, it does not necessarily mean that he will start every match. I do not see him as a problem either.”

Mourinho’s response underlined the distinction between Vinicius Junior’s status within the squad and his role in each individual game. The manager considers the forward an important player for Real Madrid, but does not regard that importance as a reason to select him automatically.

Diomande’s recent displays have strengthened his case for further opportunities, especially because of the balance he provides without the ball. At the same time, Mourinho insists that the competition should not be interpreted as a dispute involving Vinicius Junior.

The Brazilian could be available again for the meeting with Celta Vigo on 21 November, but his return will not necessarily lead to an immediate restoration to the starting line-up. Mourinho’s comments suggest that the decision will depend on how he assesses the team’s balance in the circumstances of each match.
