Mourinho reprimands assistant during Mbappe substitution in Real Madrid’s Champions League win

Jose Mourinho’s frustration boiled over on the touchline as Real Madrid secured a narrow 2-1 victory over Inter Milan in their Champions League opener at the Santiago Bernabeu on Tuesday.

The Portuguese manager appeared visibly unhappy throughout the match, repeatedly leaving the technical area to address mistakes from his players and demand greater intensity, according to Spanish newspaper AS. Although Real Madrid finished with all three points, the result did not reflect the level of concern shown by Mourinho during the contest.

The Spanish side were in danger of dropping valuable points, with the scoreline offering little comfort to a manager who had been clearly dissatisfied with his team’s performance. Mourinho’s agitation remained evident until the closing stages, when an incident involving the introduction of striker Carlos Espai provided one of the most noticeable moments of the night.

Espai was preparing to come on in added time, replacing Kylian Mbappe. As the forward received instructions before entering the pitch, Mourinho became involved in a heated exchange with one of his assistants, AS reported.

The assistant was giving Espai directions when Mourinho took hold of his arm and reprimanded him. The manager appeared to be extremely annoyed, with television cameras from Movistar capturing the incident from the touchline.

Mourinho was reportedly unhappy with the instructions being passed on to Espai and made his displeasure unmistakable. His reaction underlined the tension that had accompanied Real Madrid’s performance, despite the team managing to hold on for a 2-1 win.

The substitution took place in the final seconds of the match, with Espai entering the field in place of Mbappe. The episode followed a night in which Mourinho had already shown his frustration on several occasions, stepping away from the bench to correct his players and call for more urgency.

Real Madrid’s victory gave them a winning start to their Champions League campaign, but Mourinho’s behaviour suggested that the outcome had not fully eased his concerns. The scoreline kept the match close until the end and, according to the report, the hosts could have lost important points had the result gone against them.

The interaction between Mourinho and his assistant became the clearest expression of that unease. Rather than simply overseeing a routine late substitution, the Portuguese coach intervened when he felt the instructions given to Espai were not appropriate, leading to a sharp exchange before the change was completed.

The incident has since attracted attention among supporters, with football discussions and news coverage also continuing on the Koora forums.
