Chelsea and Mourinho Push for Drogba’s Return Amid Manchester City Interest
Didier Drogba’s potential return to Stamford Bridge is inching closer to reality, with José Mourinho pulling out all the stops to reunite with the Ivorian legend. Although the striker is currently a free agent following his departure from Galatasaray, he has yet to officially re-sign with Chelsea — the club where he became a modern icon.
Mourinho, never shy about expressing admiration for his former players, made it clear that he wants Drogba back in blue, not just for sentimentality, but for tactical reasons.
“If I want him back, it’s because he has the qualities to make the team stronger,” Mourinho stated. “We believe that Didier belongs to us. His heart is pushing him to where he feels wanted, and we are thinking about the possibility of an agreement.”
However, Chelsea face stiff competition from Premier League rivals Manchester City, who are reportedly offering Drogba a significantly higher salary. Despite the financial muscle of City, Mourinho remains unfazed.
“We want to win games and titles, and Didier is one of the best strikers in Europe,” said the Portuguese manager. “He is still very suited to the demands of the Premier League. This decision is not emotional.”
After scoring 157 goals in 341 appearances for Chelsea and famously netting the winning penalty in the 2012 Champions League final, Drogba left the club with a legacy etched into its history. Now, at 36, the veteran forward could return to where it all peaked.
Whether he follows the call of nostalgia and Mourinho’s trust — or the allure of a big contract elsewhere — remains to be seen. But one thing is certain: Chelsea want Drogba, and the ball is in his court.
