Jose Mourinho criticised Racing Santander’s players for repeatedly challenging the referee during their match against Real Madrid, saying he had never seen such intense pressure placed on officials.
The Real Madrid manager was filmed by DAZN expressing his frustration during the game, which featured an early controversy after referee Montero Montero awarded Real Madrid a penalty for Kylian Mbappe after only 10 minutes.
The decision angered Racing Santander supporters, who protested loudly from the stands. Players from the home side also made repeated appeals to the referee, behaviour which quickly drew Mourinho’s attention.
According to Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo, Mourinho was speaking to Chendo, Real Madrid’s first-team delegate, when he complained about the continuing protests.
“They are still talking to the bloody referee, it’s unbelievable,” Mourinho said.
The Portuguese coach then continued his criticism, suggesting that the officials had been put under excessive pressure by the reaction to their decisions.
“Speak to the fourth official, but not like this… I have never seen such pressure before. I have never seen anything like it,” he added.
Mourinho’s comments focused on the conduct of Racing Santander’s players and supporters rather than the original penalty decision, which had triggered the dispute during the opening stages of the match.
The incident was captured during the live coverage as Mourinho discussed the situation with Chendo, highlighting his irritation at what he considered persistent attempts to influence the referee and his team.
The match between Racing Santander and Real Madrid was described as having the sort of refereeing controversy often associated with such encounters, with the penalty awarded to Mbappe becoming the central flashpoint early in the contest.
