Pitso Mosimane has dismissed suggestions that his previous association with Mamelodi Sundowns affects his decisions when choosing the Bafana Bafana squad.
Mosimane managed the Tshwane club from 2012 to 2020, a period in which he guided them to a CAF Champions League title and five domestic league championships, among other trophies.
Several players he worked with at Sundowns, including Themba Zwane and Thapelo Morena, continue to be considered for international selection. That has led to questions over whether Mosimane’s close connection with the club influences his choices.
The coach rejected that suggestion, saying his selections are based on evidence rather than personal relationships or his history with Sundowns.
“It is so difficult in the national team, people think you close your eyes and you pick,” Mosimane said on SABC Sport.
“Or they think you pick your friend and that ‘Oh the coach was at Mamelodi Sundowns, that’s why he’s calling Ndlovu’.
“So, they think I’m busy with Sundowns, you have right to say what you want to say. I have facts and I work on facts; I have my head on the block.”
Sundowns have 12 representatives in the current Bafana squad, which is due to face Kenya in the AFCON Qualifiers.
Mosimane’s time at Sundowns was the most successful spell of his managerial career with the club, with domestic honours and continental success forming the backdrop to his continued links with several of the team’s players.
