Mosimane names Mashilo as final addition to Bafana Bafana coaching staff

Pitso Mosimane says Bafana Bafana’s technical team is complete after appointing Marcus Mashilo as goalkeeper coach ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Guinea and Eritrea.

South Africa host Guinea at Orlando Stadium on Saturday at 15:00 before facing Eritrea at Al Salam Stadium in Cairo, Egypt, on September 30. The matches mark Mosimane’s return for a second spell in charge after replacing Hugo Broos.

Mashilo previously worked with Mosimane as Wendell Robinson’s assistant goalkeeper coach at Mamelodi Sundowns in the late 2010s. He also played as a goalkeeper for Lamontville Golden Arrows and has since worked with Manqoba Mngqithi at Sundowns, Golden Arrows and Marumo Gallants.

Although not one of the biggest names in his field, Mosimane believes Mashilo’s experience makes him a strong appointment. He will also support new Bafana analyst Musi Matlaba with match analysis and data.

“The technical team is complete now we’ve got Marcus Mashilo to help us as goalkeeper coach,” Mosimane said.

“Marcus has experience, he worked with me at Sundowns. Marcus worked with coach Manqoba and coach Rulani [Mokwena] at Sundowns.

“He even went to work with coach Manqoba at Golden Arrows and at Marumo Gallants. He has learnt a lot. He was assistant to Wendell at Sundowns and also learned during the time of Manqoba as Brazilians head coach.

“Marcus doesn’t have a big, big name but he has been around. He trained Kenney [Mweene], trained Denis [Onyango], trained all the big players at Sundowns where he achieved a lot and contributed to a lot of trophies.”

Mashilo replaces Grant Johnson, the former Manning Rangers and Orlando Pirates goalkeeper who served as goalkeeper coach under Broos, including during this year’s 2026 Fifa World Cup in North America.

Former Botswana head coach Morena Ramoreboli is Mosimane’s assistant, while Matlaba and conditioning coach Kabelo Rangoaga have also joined the staff.

Mosimane began his first training camp since returning to the national team at the University of Johannesburg’s sports fields in Brixton on Monday. He said the players had made a positive early impression after assembling in Johannesburg on Sunday.

“We have all the local-based players in camp. Everybody reported yesterday, no issues,” he said.

“I feel good because I see the boys have the respect for the emblem and for the flag. It’s always good when you come on day one at the office and the boys are there and all on time.”

Luther Singh has returned to the squad after a five-year absence following a spell of good form with AEL Limassol in Cyprus. Samukele Kabini of Molde FK has also arrived.

Olwethu Makhanya, Ime Okon, Sphephelo Sithole, Relebohile Mofokeng, Shandre Campbell, Thapelo Maseko, Puso Dithejane and Mbekezeli Mbokazi are expected to join the group on Tuesday or Wednesday. Their clubs are Rangers FC, Hannover 96, CD Tondela, Royale Union Saint-Gilloise, KV Kortrijk, FC Copenhagen and Chicago Fire respectively.

Mosimane said some overseas-based players had played on Sunday and others faced long journeys involving two or three flights, but expected the full squad to report on time.
