Mosengo-Omba promises ‘paradise’ for Congolese football in FECOFA presidential race
Former CAF General Secretary Véron Mosengo-Omba has made a bold pledge to transform Congolese football if elected president of the country’s football federation, FECOFA, telling France 24 he intends to turn the organisation “into a paradise.”
“I served world football, then African football and now I plan to serve the country of my origin,” Mosengo-Omba said in the interview, framing his candidacy as a return to national service after years in continental football administration.
Mosengo-Omba has now formally entered the race as the ninth and final candidate to declare his intention to contest the presidency, setting up a competitive election featuring several high-profile figures from Congolese and international football.
Among his main challengers is former Blackburn Rovers and AS Monaco striker Shabani Nonda, who is also seeking to lead FECOFA in what is shaping up to be a closely watched leadership contest.
The federation’s presidential election, originally scheduled for 11 April, has been postponed until next month, adding further anticipation to a race that is expected to shape the future direction of football in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
With reform, governance, and development of the domestic game at the centre of debate, the campaign is increasingly being seen as a defining moment for Congolese football leadership.
