Morocco’s Mahmoud Bentayg has no plans to switch international allegiance to Egypt

Moroccan reports have rejected claims that Zamalek defender Mahmoud Bentayg is seeking Egyptian citizenship in order to represent Egypt at international level.

The speculation followed comments from Egyptian journalist Ahmed Abdel Basit, who said a Moroccan player based in the Egyptian league had asked FIFA whether he could play for Egypt after previously appearing for Morocco at the Arab Cup.

Some reports identified the player as Bentayg, who has been with Zamalek since 2024 and is married to the daughter of Ahmed Soliman, a member of the club’s board of directors.

However, Moroccan website Hesport, citing informed sources, said the reports were unfounded.

The sources said Bentayg had not contacted officials from the Egyptian Football Association about representing Egypt and was not considering such a move.

They added that the player continues to regard the Morocco national team as his priority and currently has no desire to change his international allegiance.
