Morocco international Ilias Akhomach is set to remain at Villarreal for the 2026-27 season despite interest from Spanish club Espanyol.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Villarreal have informed the 22-year-old winger that he remains part of their plans, effectively ending Espanyol’s hopes of signing him for now.

The decision represents a change in Akhomach’s situation after uncertainty over his future had attracted interest from several clubs.

Espanyol lose out in winger search

Akhomach had been one of Espanyol’s preferred targets as the Catalan club looked to strengthen their options on the wing.

The Barcelona academy graduate was also considered by Espanyol during the January transfer window, but instead moved to Rayo Vallecano on loan.

His availability became uncertain again after Íñigo Pérez took charge at Villarreal, prompting a number of clubs to monitor his situation.

However, performances during pre-season appear to have convinced Villarreal that Akhomach can play an important role in the new campaign.

Morocco winger fighting for starting role

Akhomach featured in Villarreal’s final pre-season friendly against Galatasaray, helping his side secure a 2-1 victory in Istanbul.

He then started Villarreal’s opening league fixture against newly promoted Racing Santander, further underlining his importance to the club’s plans.

Villarreal now expect the Morocco international to compete with Nicolas Pépé for the starting position on the right side of their attack.

On the opposite flank, Tajon Buchanan and Alberto Moleiro are expected to compete for regular playing time.

Villarreal hold control over Akhomach’s future

Akhomach remains under contract with Villarreal until 2028, leaving the Spanish club in a strong position to determine his future.

For the Morocco international, staying at Villarreal offers an opportunity to establish himself as a regular first-team player and continue his development in La Liga.

The decision is less positive for Espanyol, who must now continue their search for a new winger as they look to strengthen their squad for the season.
