Morocco: Wydad AC captain Nordin Amrabat faces doubt Ahead of Clasico against AS FAR

Wydad Athletic Club have confirmed that captain Nordin Amrabat has suffered a muscle injury, putting his availability for the upcoming Clasico against AS FAR in serious doubt.

The club announced the injury on Monday via its official social media channels. Amrabat picked up the problem during Wydad’s 1–0 win over Renaissance de Berkane at the Mohammed V Stadium, a crucial victory in the Botola Pro title race.

Medical tests conducted the following day revealed a muscle tear in the 38-year-old winger’s right thigh. In a statement, Wydad confirmed the injury and outlined that Amrabat will undergo a targeted treatment and rehabilitation program under the supervision of the club’s medical staff, aiming for a full recovery as soon as possible.

While the club did not provide a precise timeline for his return, his participation in Wednesday’s rescheduled ninth-round clash against AS FAR now seems unlikely. The match, set for March 4 at 23:00 at Mohammed V Stadium, pits two direct title rivals against each other, making Amrabat’s potential absence a significant setback.

Despite his advancing age, Amrabat has remained a key figure this season, appearing in 15 games across all competitions, scoring three goals and contributing two assists. Beyond his statistics, his experience and leadership have been vital in guiding Wydad through a campaign with multiple competitions.

Coach Mohamed Amine Benhachem now faces the challenge of adjusting his strategy ahead of the Clasico, whether through tactical tweaks or squad rotation. The team will need to adapt quickly to cope without their captain on the pitch.

Recovery is expected to take three to four weeks, which could see Amrabat return in time for the decisive stages of the CAF Confederation Cup, where Wydad have already secured a quarter-final spot.

For now, Wydad remain in strong contention at the top of the Botola Pro, but the upcoming Clasico will test the squad’s resilience in the absence of one of their most influential players.
