Morocco players celebrate after scoring during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Morocco have rewritten part of African World Cup history after their 3-0 victory over Canada took their goal tally to 10 in the 2026 tournament, surpassing Algeria’s previous record and matching Senegal’s best scoring return in a single edition.

The Atlas Lions’ convincing win secured their place in the quarter-finals and lifted them beyond the seven goals Algeria scored at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

With 10 goals, Morocco now share the record for the highest number of goals scored by an African nation in a single World Cup tournament alongside Senegal.

The achievement underlines Morocco’s impressive attacking displays during the competition as they continue another memorable campaign on the global stage.

Morocco continue impressive World Cup campaign

Having reached the semi-finals in 2022, Morocco have once again established themselves among the tournament’s strongest teams.

Their latest victory over Canada extended their run in the competition while also adding another landmark to the country’s World Cup history.

The Atlas Lions have combined defensive organisation with attacking efficiency throughout the tournament, allowing them to progress while steadily increasing their goal tally.

The result against Canada not only ensured qualification for the next round but also elevated Morocco above Algeria’s previous benchmark for goals scored by an African nation at a single World Cup.

Senegal remain level on goals

Although Morocco have now reached 10 goals, they share the record with Senegal.

The Lions of Teranga also scored 10 goals during their 2026 World Cup campaign before being eliminated by Belgium following a 3-2 extra-time defeat in the knockout stage.

There is, however, one notable difference between the two achievements.

Senegal reached the 10-goal mark in just four matches, while Morocco required five games to equal the total.

Senegal’s tally was boosted by a dominant 5-0 victory over Iraq during the group stage.

Ismaïla Sarr finished as the team’s leading scorer with four goals during the tournament.

Opportunity to set a new record

Unlike Senegal, Morocco remain in the competition and have the opportunity to establish a new African scoring record.

The Atlas Lions have already exceeded their attacking output from the 2022 World Cup, where they scored six goals across seven matches on their way to the semi-finals.

One of the standout performers has been Ismael Saibari, who became the first African player to score in three consecutive World Cup matches.

His contribution has helped Morocco maintain their momentum as they prepare for another major test.

France await in quarter-finals

Morocco’s next challenge comes against France in the quarter-finals.

The meeting will also provide the Atlas Lions with an opportunity to face the side that ended their historic run in the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup.

France have scored seven goals in the current tournament, setting up a contest between two of the competition’s most effective attacking teams.

With Morocco already matching Senegal’s African scoring record, victory over France would not only extend their World Cup journey but also give them the chance to establish a new benchmark for goals scored by an African nation at a single tournament.
