The streets of Casablanca erupted in celebration on Monday night as Morocco’s U20 national team touched down at Mohammed V Airport around 9 p.m., returning home as FIFA U20 World Cup champions for the first time in the country’s history.

The team’s arrival was met with a jubilant crowd waving flags, chanting patriotic songs, and celebrating a moment that has united the nation.

The Atlas Cubs made history in Santiago, Chile, with a 2-0 victory over six-time champions Argentina in Sunday’s final. The landmark win, achieved through tactical discipline and exceptional teamwork, has sparked a wave of national pride and celebrations across major cities, including Rabat, Marrakech, Casablanca, and Tangier.

Yassir Zabiri was the star of the night, scoring both goals—an expertly taken free-kick in the 12th minute and a composed finish in the 28th minute after being set up by Othmane Maamma. Despite Argentina dominating possession, Morocco’s defensive organisation held firm, denying their opponents any breakthrough.

Zabiri’s outstanding performance earned him the Silver Ball award, while Maamma was honoured with the Golden Ball as the tournament’s best player, highlighting Morocco’s dominance throughout the competition.

Head coach Mohamed Ouahbi praised the team’s resilience and Morocco’s long-term football development strategy, saying, “We feel immense happiness. We remember all the challenges we went through to reach this stage and break barriers. We thank His Majesty the King for his continuous encouragement and support for football development.”

The team’s remarkable achievement has been applauded globally, with international media praising Morocco’s youth academy system, tactical excellence, and collective spirit.

The future for these young players now looks bright with the expectation that they will form the core of the senior national team in years to come.
