A Moroccan press report claims that Morocco and Benin were the teams most affected by refereeing decisions at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
According to Al Mountakhab, Morocco suffered several costly moments during their tournament run, including missed calls that had a direct impact on match outcomes. The newspaper reported that the Atlas Lions were denied three possible penalty kicks and that officials failed to intervene on several occasions.
It added that “the referees ignoring eight clear fouls in the final third of the field.”
The report further stated that “Morocco also suffered 4 influential moments in the results of the matches in which the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology was not consulted, bringing the total number of refereeing errors that affected the Atlas Lions to 15 influential errors during their journey in the tournament.”
In contrast, the paper noted that “the Algerian national team, despite its repeated complaints about refereeing during the tournament, came in 12th place on the list of teams most affected by refereeing errors.”
Morocco have now reached the semi-finals, where they will face Nigeria on Wednesday. The Super Eagles eliminated Algeria in the quarter-finals.
Egypt will meet Senegal in the other semi-final, also scheduled for Wednesday.
