Morocco step up Futsal AFCON title defence with Bosnia double-header

Morocco’s national futsal team will begin another important phase of preparations for the 2026 Futsal Africa Cup of Nations with two friendly matches against Bosnia and Herzegovina this month.

The Royal Moroccan Football Federation has confirmed that the Atlas Lions will take on the European side twice, with the first meeting scheduled for Thursday, August 13, before the teams face each other again on Saturday, August 15.

Both matches will be played at 7 p.m. at the Mohammed VI Football Complex near Rabat, giving coach Hicham Dguig and his technical team an opportunity to assess the squad ahead of their continental title defence.

The federation has yet to announce the players selected for the two encounters.

Dguig gets chance to test Morocco’s options

The back-to-back fixtures are designed to provide more than match practice, with Morocco using the games to sharpen the squad physically and improve understanding between the players.

European opposition will also offer Dguig an opportunity to experiment with tactical approaches and different player combinations while assessing the form and fitness of his options.

With competition for places expected to intensify before the tournament, the Bosnia matches could prove particularly important for players looking to establish themselves in Morocco’s plans.

The friendlies form part of a wider preparation programme aimed at ensuring the Atlas Lions are at their best when the pressure of defending their continental crown arrives.

Morocco chasing a fourth straight title

Morocco will enter the 2026 Futsal AFCON as both hosts and defending champions, having established themselves as the dominant force in African futsal in recent years.

CAF confirmed Morocco’s automatic qualification as hosts, while seven other nations were required to navigate two-legged qualifying ties for places at the eight-team finals.

The Atlas Lions have won the last three editions of the competition, putting them alongside Egypt as the continent’s most successful teams with three titles apiece.

Their latest triumph came in April 2024, when Dguig’s side produced a commanding 5-1 victory over Angola in the final in Rabat.

Soufiane Borite, Idriss Raiss El Fenni, Soufiane El Mesrar, Anas El Ayyane and Bilal Bakkali were all on target as Morocco completed another successful campaign.

Home advantage adds pressure

Morocco’s status as hosts means expectations will be particularly high when the next edition gets underway.

The Atlas Lions will be seeking to extend their dominance on home soil, while Dguig must balance the demands of defending the title with building a squad capable of sustaining Morocco’s growing reputation in the sport.

CAF’s published 2026 competitions calendar lists Morocco as host of the Futsal Africa Cup of Nations, although the tournament dates were still subject to confirmation in the latest version.

The Bosnia and Herzegovina double-header therefore represents an important early test in Morocco’s preparations, with further camps and international fixtures expected before the continental championship begins.
