Nayef Aguerd closes in on Real Sociedad move

Moroccan international Nayef Aguerd is on the verge of completing his return to Real Sociedad after successfully passing his medical examination ahead of a proposed move to the Spanish club.

The defender has cleared the medical stage of the transfer, leaving only the completion of the remaining official procedures before the deal can be formally concluded.

Aguerd is expected to sign his contract with Real Sociedad on Thursday, paving the way for him to return to a club where he enjoyed a productive spell during the 2024/2025 season.

The Moroccan centre-back previously represented Real Sociedad on loan from West Ham United during that campaign and made a strong impression during his time in Spain.

His performances during his initial spell reportedly convinced the Basque club to explore the possibility of bringing him back, with negotiations eventually progressing towards another loan agreement.

Under the terms of the proposed deal, Aguerd will return to Real Sociedad on loan, with the Spanish club having an option to make the transfer permanent at the end of the loan period.

The arrangement gives Real Sociedad the opportunity to assess the defender over the course of the upcoming campaign before deciding whether to exercise the purchase option and retain him on a permanent basis.

For Aguerd, the move represents a return to familiar surroundings and another opportunity to continue his career in La Liga.

The 30-year-old defender has already gained valuable experience in Spanish football from his previous spell with Real Sociedad, meaning he should require little time to adapt to the club’s environment and playing demands.

Aguerd’s return also comes after a season with Olympique Marseille, whom he joined from West Ham United last summer in a transfer reportedly worth around €23 million.

His move to Marseille marked another significant step in a career that has seen him establish himself as one of Morocco’s most experienced defenders.

However, the opportunity to return to Real Sociedad appears to have appealed to both the player and the Spanish club, with the two parties now close to reaching the final stage of the agreement.

The successful completion of his medical represents an important milestone in the transfer process, as Real Sociedad can now proceed with the contractual formalities.

Once the contract is signed and the necessary paperwork is completed, the Spanish club is expected to officially announce Aguerd’s return.

His arrival would provide Real Sociedad with additional experience and quality in central defence, while also giving the Moroccan international the chance to play regularly at a club he already knows well.

For Real Sociedad, the option to buy included in the agreement provides flexibility, allowing the club to make a long-term decision based on Aguerd’s performances during his second spell.

The Moroccan defender, meanwhile, will be hoping to reproduce the level of performances that made his first spell in San Sebastián a positive one.

With the medical successfully completed and only the final official procedures remaining, Aguerd is now just one step away from being confirmed as a Real Sociedad player once again.
