The world of football came together in spectacular fashion earlier this week in Laayoune, Morocco, to celebrate the 44th anniversary of the Green March. The occasion was marked by a star-studded gala match, bringing together legends from both African and global football, providing fans with a thrilling showcase of skill and nostalgia.
The match, dubbed the Solidarity and Fraternity game, was held at the Mohamed Laghdaf Stadium and organized by the Brothers Sports Association for Youth and Charitable Works. It featured two illustrious lineups: one side representing Africa’s finest, including Samuel Eto’o, Kalusha Bwalya, Nwankwo Kanu, El Hadji Diouf, and Nourredine Naybet, among others; and the other showcasing international icons such as Luis Figo, Rivaldo, Cafu, and Pauleta.
The spectacle delivered on its promise, as fans witnessed moments of brilliance, clever interplay, and flashes of the extraordinary talent that made these players household names. Amid the entertaining display, one player stood out: Samuel Eto’o. Though slightly transformed physically with the passage of time, Eto’o demonstrated that his trademark acceleration and sharpness remained intact. It was he who netted the decisive goal of the match, securing a 1-0 victory for the African XI.
The event was not only a celebration of football but also a tribute to solidarity, fraternity, and the unifying power of sport. Fans in attendance were treated to a rare opportunity to see legends from different eras and continents sharing the same pitch, creating unforgettable memories and honoring both the Green March and the spirit of the beautiful game.
