Morocco: Rulani Mokwena and Wydad Casablanca part ways after underwhelming season

Wydad Casablanca and Rulani Mokwena have officially ended their partnership, bringing the South African manager’s brief tenure in Morocco to a close after just one season.

The club confirmed the departure in a statement released on Tuesday, 20 May 2025, announcing that the two parties had reached a mutual agreement to terminate Mokwena’s contract with immediate effect.

“Wydad Athletic Club and Rulani Mokwena have mutually agreed to terminate their contracts with immediate effect,” the club announced via its official website, marking the end of a chapter that began with high expectations but ultimately yielded little success.

Mokwena’s appointment was viewed as a bold step for both the club and coach.

Following a successful stint in South African football, Mokwena ventured into North Africa to take charge of one of Morocco’s most decorated clubs.

However, the transition proved challenging. Despite the ambition and promise that accompanied his arrival, results on the pitch failed to meet expectations, and the season fell short of Wydad’s usual high standards.

While the campaign did not go as planned, both parties maintained a tone of mutual respect in their farewell messages.

The Moroccan club expressed appreciation for the commitment shown by Mokwena and his team during a difficult period.

“The club expresses its deep gratitude to coach Mokwena and his coaching staff for their unwavering commitment, hard work, and sacrifices during a difficult season,” the statement read, acknowledging the efforts made despite the disappointing outcomes.

Mokwena, for his part, extended warm wishes to the club as it looks ahead to an important period in its history.

In particular, he referenced Wydad’s involvement in the upcoming 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, which kicks off in June.

“Much success for the new season and the Club World Cup,” Mokwena said. “May you continue to make history and inspire us all.”

The 37-year-old coach now faces a new chapter in his managerial career, while Wydad Casablanca begins the search for a new leader capable of restoring the club’s dominance both domestically and on the continental stage.

Though their time together was brief and tested by challenges, both Mokwena and Wydad depart on amicable terms, leaving the door open for mutual respect and future opportunities.
