Morocco international Nayef Aguerd is gradually rediscovering his best form after a difficult six-month injury absence, according to Olympique de Marseille coach Bruno Genesio.

The defender endured a challenging period that kept him out of the 2026 World Cup, but his recent performances suggest he is making significant progress in his recovery.

Speaking at a press conference on Saturday ahead of Marseille’s Ligue 1 meeting with Lens, Genesio discussed the physical and psychological difficulties Aguerd experienced during his lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Genesio reflects on Aguerd’s difficult recovery

According to Foot Mercato, the French coach explained that the uncertainty surrounding the Moroccan defender’s return to action made his recovery particularly challenging.

Unlike players who have a clear rehabilitation schedule, Aguerd spent several months without knowing when he would be fit enough to return to competitive football.

“He missed a World Cup. That is no small thing in a player’s career,” Genesio said.

The coach also highlighted Aguerd’s uncertain summer, during which a proposed return to Real Sociedad collapsed despite the defender undergoing a medical examination with the Spanish club.

Genesio believes those circumstances meant the Moroccan needed additional time to rebuild his physical condition and confidence.

He also praised Marseille’s medical staff for their role in helping the defender return to competitive action.

Former Rennes coach backs Moroccan defender

Genesio, who previously worked with Aguerd at Stade Rennais, expressed confidence that the centre-back is gradually returning to the level he demonstrated before his injury problems.

“I coached him at Rennes. He is returning to that level,” Genesio said.

The French tactician also highlighted the qualities Aguerd brings to Marseille’s defence, including his aerial ability, pace, composure in possession and experience.

Strong Europa League display offers encouragement

Aguerd’s improving condition was evident during Marseille’s 1-0 Europa League victory over Bayer Leverkusen on Thursday.

The Moroccan international started in central defence and helped his side keep a clean sheet in Germany, with Amine Gouiri scoring the decisive goal in the 77th minute.

The victory represented Marseille’s first win in this season’s Europa League league phase following three consecutive defeats.

Aguerd targets strong return ahead of Morocco fixtures

The defender’s return to form comes at an important time for Morocco as the Atlas Lions prepare for their November international fixtures.

Morocco are scheduled to face Niger on November 13 in Casablanca before travelling to Rabat for the return encounter on November 17 in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Aguerd’s improving fitness will be encouraging news for the North African side as they prepare for the two matches.
