After a prolonged wait, the renovation works at the Mohammed V Sports Complex in Casablanca have commenced in preparation for hosting the upcoming African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2025.
The decision to temporarily close the complex for rehabilitation aims to ensure its readiness before this highly anticipated continental football event.
Karim Klaïbi, a member of the leadership and monitoring committee for the Mohammed V Stadium, confirmed the initiation of works on the field on Monday.
A comprehensive strategy has been devised for the refurbishment program of this significant sports facility.
Expressing gratitude to the relevant authorities for taking action to restore and repair the Mohammed V Stadium, Klaïbi highlighted that the development of the facility is expected to cover various aspects.
Rachid Naïfi, the director of Marrakech Stadium responsible for reconditioning the “Donor” stadium, had previously stated to Hesport, “Maintenance work will be carried out on several facilities at the Mohammed V Stadium to ensure it is in the best condition.
There is a work plan to have the stadium ready to meet high standards.”
He added, “The stadium is expected to be available to the clubs in Casablanca again by the end of December this year, as the work is scheduled to be completed by the 24th of the same month.”
Naïfi explained that the rehabilitation and maintenance of Mohammed V Stadium are part of the project initiated by the Royal Moroccan Football Federation in preparation for hosting the African Cup of Nations in 2025 and the 2030 World Cup.
The source revealed that significant changes will be made to the equipment storage, conference hall, guest facilities, the pitch, and the garage.
These adjustments aim to meet the requirements of the African and international football federations.
It is noteworthy that there will be no expansion in terms of the audience capacity in the stands of Mohammed V Stadium.
The closure of the stadium for renovation has necessitated both Raja and Wydad sports clubs to play their matches outside the economic capital.
