Morocco overcome Argentina with a 2-0 victory to win 2025 FIFA U20 World Cup

Morocco made history on Sunday night, winning their first-ever FIFA U20 World Cup after defeating six-time champions Argentina 2-0 in the final at the Estadio Nacional Julio Martínez Prádanos in Santiago, Chile.

Yassir Zabiri was the hero of the night, opening the scoring in the 12th minute with a brilliantly taken free-kick that beat Argentine goalkeeper Santino Barbi. Morocco doubled their advantage in the 28th minute when captain Othmane Maamma provided a perfect assist for Zabiri, who finished clinically from close range.

Despite Argentina dominating possession with 71% of the ball, they were unable to break down Morocco’s disciplined and resilient defence. The Atlas Cubs remained tactically organised, blocking key shots and frustrating the Argentine attack.

The goalkeeper also played a crucial role in maintaining the clean sheet, denying several attempts and staying composed during VAR reviews and set-piece situations.

In the second half, Morocco shifted into a defensive shape, using smart substitutions to strengthen their backline and midfield. Argentina pushed forward in search of a breakthrough but wasted several opportunities and struggled to convert free-kicks.

Zabiri, who scored both goals, was deservedly named Man of the Match, capping off an unforgettable night for Moroccan football.

The victory marks a landmark achievement for Morocco, showcasing the strength of their youth development and signalling a bright future for the national team on the global stage.

They are only the second African country to win the FIFA U20 World Cup and the first North African side to claim gold at that level.
