Mohammed Ouahbi Targets 2027 AFCON Triumph With Morocco

Morocco coach Mohammed Ouahbi has made it clear that the Atlas Lions will head into the 2027 AFCON with one objective in mind after openly declaring the country’s ambition to win the continental title.

Speaking after the draw for the 2027 AFCON qualifiers, Ouahbi wasted little time in outlining the expectations surrounding the Moroccan national team as preparations continue for the tournament.

“Our ambition and our objective for this Africa Cup of Nations is to win it.”

While Morocco are widely viewed as one of the favourites, the national coach stressed that the team cannot afford to underestimate any opponent during the qualification campaign. Ouahbi insisted that every match must be approached seriously to avoid unexpected setbacks.

The Moroccan tactician reserved particular attention for Gabon, whom he described as a competitive side capable of causing problems in the group.

“They finished second in their group during the World Cup qualifiers and even played in the playoffs,” he pointed out.

Ouahbi also highlighted the challenge posed by Niger, especially because the national side is coached by former Moroccan goalkeeper and respected football figure Badou Zaki.

“He’s a legend for Moroccan coaches,” Ouahbi stated.

Moroccan sports journalist Moncef Ait Srhir believes the draw remains favourable for the Atlas Lions, although he warned that several teams in the group could still create difficulties if not treated with caution.

“On paper, the group seems manageable for the Moroccan team with a clear advantage for the Lions. However, it remains balanced,” he explains.

According to Ait Srhir, Gabon will be eager to recover from a difficult period, while both Niger and Lesotho will also hope to make an impression during the qualifiers.

“The key to getting through this phase without any unpleasant surprises lies in good preparation, working on the details, and approaching matches with a lot of seriousness and respect for the opponents,” he adds.

The journalist also backed Ouahbi’s public comments, saying the coach’s message accurately reflects the growing ambitions of Moroccan football on the African continent.

“His discourse around the objective of winning the 2027 AFCON is perfectly logical. It reflects both Morocco’s desire, ambition and ability to win this competition, while maintaining respect for the competitors,” he concluded.

Despite the confidence surrounding Morocco’s AFCON ambitions, Ouahbi explained that his immediate focus remains on upcoming international assignments before attention fully shifts toward the continental competition.

The coach added that a more detailed study of Morocco’s opponents will take place after the World Cup once current priorities have been addressed.
