Morocco head coach Walid Regragui faced the press on Tuesday, addressing the disappointing exit in the round of 16 in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations after losing to South Africa.
The Atlas Lions suffered a 2-0 defeat to the Bafana Bafana at the Stade Laurent Pokou in San Pedro, failing to advance to the quarter-finals.
Regragui took full responsibility, acknowledging the need for more intensity and efficiency in the match.
Expressing regret over missed opportunities, including a crucial penalty, he admitted,
“These are my choices, I don’t hide. I assume elimination.”
Despite creating numerous chances, Morocco failed to convert, and a punishing free kick sealed their fate.
Reflecting on the competition’s challenges, Regragui emphasized the importance of being lethal in the AFCON.
He revealed plans to discuss his future with the president, stating;
“I don’t want to express myself directly. We will decide what is best for the national team.”
Having initially aimed for a spot in the semi-finals, the coach expressed disappointment, particularly for the devoted fans who, he believes, deserved the African Cup.
The press conference highlighted Regragui’s accountability and determination to navigate the team’s future, underscoring the challenges faced in a fiercely competitive tournament.
