Morocco forward Walid Cheddira scores to seal 3-1 win for Espanyol against Celta Vigo

Moroccan forward, Walid Cheddira delivered a game-clinching performance for Espanyol on Saturday, scoring a late goal to seal a 3-1 victory over Celta Vigo in a Round 15 clash of the Spanish La Liga.

Cheddira, who began the game on the bench, made his mark after being introduced in the 67th minute, replacing Irvin Cardona.

The forward’s contribution came at a crucial moment, as he raced down the left flank and calmly slotted the ball beneath Vicente Guaita, easing the tension among Espanyol fans and securing a vital three points for his team.

Espanyol had taken the lead in the first half through Cardona, who unleashed a powerful strike from outside the box after intercepting a ball from a corner, sending the home crowd into a frenzy. In the second half, the hosts maintained their momentum. Leandro Cabrera doubled the lead with a stunning effort from a corner, marking his first goal of the season.

However, Espanyol’s control was tested when Carlos Romero conceded a penalty following a foul on Óscar Mingueza. Iago Aspas converted the spot kick, narrowing the scoreline and creating a nervy atmosphere at the RCDE Stadium. Cheddira’s composed finish in the closing minutes provided much-needed relief and restored Espanyol’s two-goal cushion.

Despite the win, Espanyol remains in the relegation zone, sitting in 18th place due to goal difference. Nevertheless, the victory narrows the gap to the teams above them, offering hope for survival as the season progresses.

For Cheddira, the goal marked his first of the season, adding to his one assist in 11 league appearances.
