Raja Casablanca Part Ways with Coach José Romao Following CAF Champions League Exit
Raja Casablanca have announced the amicable termination of their contract with Portuguese coach José Romao, following the club’s recent elimination from the CAF Champions League.
The Moroccan giants confirmed the departure on Monday via an official statement on their website. Romao, who took over in November last year to replace Abdelhak Benchikha, was unable to deliver the desired success, with the team’s campaign in the CAF Champions League ending abruptly last Friday after a defeat to Algeria’s Entente Sportive de Sétif.
In response to the dismissal, Raja have appointed Fathi Jamal as interim coach until the end of the season. Jamal is no stranger to the club, having previously taken charge on a temporary basis during Raja’s historic first participation in the 2000 FIFA Club World Cup held in Brazil.
Romao’s tenure at Raja was marked by disappointment, including the failure to contend for honours in the Moroccan Pro Elite 1 league. The early exit from Africa’s premier club competition proved the final blow to his stint with the Greens of Casablanca.
With Jamal now at the helm, Raja will look to regroup and salvage their domestic season as they prepare for the final stages of the campaign.
