The future of Morocco head coach Walid Regragui remains uncertain following the Atlas Lions’ disappointing end to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, with questions now hanging over his position.
Regragui was unable to guide Morocco to a long-awaited continental triumph as the team fell short in the final against Senegal. The Atlas Lions came agonisingly close to ending their long drought, having not lifted the Africa Cup of Nations trophy since 1976, but saw their hopes dashed by a 1 0 defeat after extra time.
The setback has placed the spotlight firmly on the Moroccan Football Federation, with reports indicating that the tournament assessment files are currently on the desk of federation president Fouzi Lekjaa.
According to a source, the decision now rests with Lekjaa, who is weighing multiple scenarios regarding the national team’s technical direction.
The report stated, “Lekjaa will have 3 options: either renewing confidence in Regragui before Morocco’s participation in the World Cup, or strengthening his technical staff with some elements, or thanking the Lions’ coach.”
Morocco are already looking ahead to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where they have been drawn in Group C alongside Brazil, Scotland and Haiti, a challenging section that adds further significance to the decision surrounding Regragui’s future.
