Morocco international El-Faouzi reveals why he chose the Atlas Lions over Germany

Morocco international Soufiane El-Faouzi has explained his decision to continue representing the Atlas Lions instead of Germany, describing it as “a decision from the heart”.

The 24-year-old Schalke midfielder made his Morocco debut in a 5-0 friendly victory over Burundi and remains eligible to represent Germany because of the non-competitive nature of that appearance.

Speaking to Sky Sports after Schalke’s goalless draw with Elversberg, El-Faouzi said his first experience with Morocco played an important role in his decision.

El-Faouzi enjoyed Morocco experience

El-Faouzi revealed that he received his first Morocco invitation in May and was immediately impressed by his time with the national team.

“I received an invitation in May and had already been with Morocco,” El-Faouzi said, recalling his debut against Burundi.

The midfielder said the friendly allowed him to experience the Morocco set-up without ending his eligibility to represent Germany.

“It was a friendly match. Nevertheless, I really enjoyed the experience and had a good relationship with the coach,” he said.

El-Faouzi subsequently decided to continue his international career with Morocco, describing his choice as “a decision from the heart.”

Morocco’s World Cup success provided motivation

The Schalke player also pointed to Morocco’s recent performances on the world stage as another source of inspiration.

“The last two World Cups were very strong for Morocco,” he said.

The Atlas Lions made history by reaching the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, while also competing at the 2018 tournament in Russia.

El-Faouzi said he was excited to return to the national team and contribute to Morocco’s continued progress.

His decision comes amid reported interest from Germany, with the midfielder having attracted the attention of the German national team set-up under Jurgen Klopp.

However, he was not included in Klopp’s first squad of 44 players, while Morocco coach Mohamed Ouahbi selected him for the upcoming international fixtures.

El-Faouzi eyes competitive Morocco debut

El-Faouzi could now make his first competitive appearance for Morocco during the opening matches of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.

The Atlas Lions will host Gabon in Rabat on 25 September before travelling to Bloemfontein in South Africa to face Lesotho on 29 September.

Morocco will also play Ghana in a friendly in Tangier in October.

Having already featured for the Atlas Lions in a friendly, El-Faouzi will now look to earn more playing time and establish himself in Ouahbi’s squad.
