Abdelhamid Ait Boudlal faces uncertain Rennes future

Moroccan defender Abdelhamid Ait Boudlal’s future at Stade Rennais has become uncertain, with negotiations over a contract extension reportedly failing to make significant progress amid continued interest from Premier League side Fulham.

As reported earlier, the 20-year-old centre-back was expected to renew his contract with the French club. However, an agreement between the two parties is not close, casting doubt over the defender’s long-term future at Roazhon Park.

Although Rennes have held discussions with Ait Boudlal over an improved deal, his current situation in the team could complicate negotiations. The Moroccan international has lost his place in the starting lineup after a difficult start to the season, raising questions about his role in the club’s plans.

Ait Boudlal began the campaign alongside Charlie Cresswell in central defence, but his performances have reportedly fallen below the levels he displayed during the second half of last season. Anthony Rouault has since earned more playing time, increasing competition for defensive positions.

Rennes head coach Franck Haise has also openly criticised the young defender following a series of error-prone performances, adding to the pressure on Ait Boudlal as he attempts to regain his place in the team.

His reduced role could prove significant in determining whether he commits his future to Rennes, particularly if he believes regular playing time is essential for his continued development.

Fulham had two bids rejected

Despite his recent difficulties, Ait Boudlal remains a highly valued prospect, with Fulham showing strong interest in signing him during the summer transfer window.

According to reports, the Premier League club submitted two offers for the Moroccan defender, with their second proposal reaching €35 million. Rennes reportedly rejected both bids as they held out for a fee of €40 million.

The difference between the two valuations prevented a transfer from materialising, leaving Ait Boudlal at the French club for the current campaign.

Fulham’s interest highlights the defender’s standing in the transfer market despite his recent struggles. At just 20, he is still viewed as a player with considerable potential, and his situation at Rennes could attract further attention if his role in the team remains limited.

Ait Boudlal’s current contract runs until 2028, meaning Rennes retain contractual control over his future. However, the absence of significant progress in renewal talks leaves uncertainty over whether the club can secure a longer commitment from the Moroccan.

Rennes had appeared ready to extend his stay, but the latest developments suggest that both his playing situation and the club’s valuation could become important factors in determining the next stage of his career.

For now, no agreement is close, and Ait Boudlal’s future at Roazhon Park remains unresolved as the defender looks to recover his form and establish himself once again in the first team.
