Morocco condemns racist abuse of Omar El Hilali in La Liga
The Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) has expressed strong support for Omar El Hilali after the 22-year-old Moroccan international was subjected to racist abuse during Espanyol’s La Liga match against Elche on Sunday.
In a statement, the FRMF condemned the incident and reaffirmed its commitment to combating racism in football.
“The Royal Moroccan Football Federation expresses its unconditional and unreserved solidarity and support for Moroccan international Omar El Hilali, following the insulting remarks he was subjected to during the match played on Sunday, March 1, 2026, between his team Espanyol Barcelona and Elche, as part of the 26th round of the Spanish league.
The Royal Moroccan Football Federation reaffirms its categorical rejection of all forms of racism and discrimination, both on and off the field, and reiterates its commitment to the values of respect, tolerance, and sportsmanship that must prevail in all football competitions,” the federation said.
The incident occurred in the 80th minute of the match, when referee Iosu Galech Apezteguia implemented La Liga’s anti-racism protocol after El Hilali reported abuse from Elche striker Rafa Mir. According to the official report, Mir allegedly told El Hilali, “You came by boat.”
The Moroccan full-back, who has one international cap, received immediate support from his club and national federation following the incident.
The FRMF’s statement emphasized that racism and discrimination have no place in football and called for all players, officials, and fans to uphold the principles of respect and sportsmanship.
The episode highlights ongoing concerns over racist abuse in European football and the increasing use of anti-racism protocols during matches to protect players. La Liga officials have yet to announce further action against those involved in the incident.
The FRMF’s public declaration reinforces Morocco’s zero-tolerance stance and sends a clear message to the footballing community about the importance of solidarity and ethical conduct on the field.
