Morocco commits $304m to Fes stadium upgrade ahead of 2030 World Cup
Morocco has launched a MAD 2.816 billion ($304.3m) project to modernise the Fes Sports Complex as part of its preparations to co-host the 2030 FIFA World Cup with Spain and Portugal.
The National Agency for Public Equipment (ANEP) has opened an international tender for the redevelopment, which aims to turn the stadium into a modern, environmentally sustainable venue capable of hosting major international events.
The project is expected to meet FIFA’s sustainability requirements while also targeting “HQE Sustainable Infrastructure” certification.
Focus on energy and water efficiency
The redevelopment will place strong emphasis on reducing the stadium’s environmental impact.
The project aims to cut energy consumption by at least 30% compared with a standard design through the use of LED lighting, improved heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems, as well as better thermal insulation.
Between 5% and 10% of the complex’s energy is expected to come from renewable sources, while a centralised technical management system will be used to monitor and optimise consumption.
Water efficiency is another key component of the plans.
The stadium is expected to reduce water consumption by at least 40% through more efficient equipment and the collection and reuse of rainwater and greywater for irrigation and other purposes that do not require drinking water.
The drainage system will also be strengthened to improve the complex’s ability to cope with changing climate conditions.
Low-carbon construction planned
Morocco’s plans also seek to reduce the carbon footprint of the construction process.
Contractors will be encouraged to use materials such as low-carbon concrete, recycled steel reinforcement and bio-based products, while local sourcing will be prioritised to reduce emissions associated with transportation.
A life-cycle assessment will be carried out to assess the carbon embedded in construction materials and processes.
The construction site will also operate under a low-impact charter covering waste management, erosion and sediment control and air-quality protection.
Stadium to become more accessible
The project extends beyond the stadium itself, with plans to improve its connection with the surrounding urban environment.
Existing natural features and biodiversity around the site will be protected, while efforts will be made to limit unnecessary soil artificialisation.
Transport access will also be improved through better links to public transport, pedestrian routes and cycling infrastructure.
Waste management will follow circular-economy principles, with construction companies expected to sort, reuse, recycle and recover materials while maintaining records of construction waste.
Preparing Fes for major events
The upgraded complex will also feature improved facilities for spectators, players and staff, with attention given to thermal and acoustic comfort and indoor air quality.
The design will take account of climate and natural hazards, including extreme winds, while complying with Morocco’s seismic standards.
