Morocco coach Mohamed Ouahbi backs squad selection for Ecuador and Paraguay friendlies
Morocco head coach Mohamed Ouahbi has expressed strong confidence in his squad selection ahead of upcoming international friendlies against Ecuador and Paraguay.
Speaking during a press conference at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Maamoura, the coach said he is optimistic the players he has selected will deliver.
“I am satisfied with the spirit shown by the players as we approach the upcoming matches,” Ouahbi said.
He also pointed to a strong sense of unity within the group, underlining what he described as a “high national spirit” and a genuine connection to Morocco among the players.
The coach emphasised the collective ambition within the squad, adding, “I have sensed a group that wants to make progress and is ready to develop.”
Addressing key absences, Ouahbi confirmed that Sofyan Amrabat, Nayef Aguerd and Othmane Maama are currently sidelined through injury but are expected to return to the national setup soon.
He also clarified that the omission of Youssef En-Nesyri was a tactical decision, explaining that he preferred not to include too many strikers in the squad. A similar approach was taken with Ilias Akhomach, whose absence, despite a minor injury, was largely due to strategic considerations.
On the exclusion of Maghreb Fez striker Soufiane Benjedida, Ouahbi acknowledged the player’s quality but stressed that selection is based on performance within a competitive environment. He nevertheless made it clear that the door remains open for future inclusion if the striker maintains his current form.
Ouahbi is set to begin his tenure with two friendly matches, facing Ecuador on March 27 in Madrid, followed by a clash against Paraguay on March 31 in Lens.
Both fixtures form part of Morocco’s preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where they have been drawn in Group C alongside Brazil, Scotland, and Haiti.
