It had been rumored for weeks, and now it’s official: Portuguese coach José Romao is no longer at the helm of AS FAR. The coaching carousel continues in the Moroccan top flight. Following Denis Lavagne’s departure from MAS Fez, it is now Romao’s turn to step down.
Long under pressure due to AS FAR’s inconsistent performances in the Botola Maroc Telecom D1, Romao officially resigned on Friday morning, just hours after a 3-0 defeat at the Marrakech Stadium against Hassan Benabicha’s KACM. Initially expected to leave midway through the season, the Portuguese coach had managed to stabilize the team from the fifth matchday. However, the Militaires collapsed after the winter break, recording two draws and five defeats in seven matches in the second half of the season.
Abdelmalek El Aziz, Romao’s assistant, will take over as technical director of the capital club, which currently sits 10th in the standings with 25 points.
