Moroccan winger Nordin Amrabat joins FC Utrecht after successful two-week trial

Dutch club FC Utrecht have officially confirmed that Moroccan international Nordin Amrabat is now eligible to represent the first team in competitive matches after completing a two-week training period with the squad.

The 39-year-old winger had been training under head coach Anthony Correa as he assessed his options following his departure from Wydad Casablanca. After impressing during his time with the team, Amrabat has now been officially added to Utrecht’s squad and can feature in official fixtures with immediate effect.

Amrabat brings considerable experience to the Dutch club, having earned 64 international caps for Morocco and represented the Atlas Lions at the highest level. Throughout his career, he has also won league titles in Turkey, Greece and Saudi Arabia, while playing for several notable clubs across Europe and the Middle East.

His impressive club career includes spells with PSV Eindhoven, Galatasaray, Málaga and Watford, among others. He most recently played for Wydad Casablanca, but became a free agent this summer after his contract with the Moroccan giants expired.

His route back to the Netherlands was helped by his family connection to FC Utrecht. After leaving Wydad, Amrabat discussed his future with his younger brother, Sofyan Amrabat, who previously played for Utrecht and came through the club’s youth system.

Sofyan subsequently contacted Utrecht technical director Jordy Zuidam, opening the door for Nordin to join the club’s training sessions and prove his fitness and ability to contribute to the squad.

The trial period was viewed positively by both Amrabat and the club, eventually resulting in Utrecht deciding to register the veteran forward with their first team.

Amrabat will wear the number 39 shirt and is immediately available for selection in official matches.

Speaking about his move, Amrabat expressed his pride at joining Utrecht and highlighted the special significance of the transfer because of his family’s longstanding connection with the club.

His brother Sofyan spent his formative years at Utrecht, progressing through the club’s youth ranks before establishing himself as an accomplished midfielder at the highest level.

That history has created a strong bond between the Amrabat family and FC Utrecht, making Nordin’s return to Dutch football particularly meaningful.

The experienced Moroccan now has the opportunity to add another chapter to his long career while bringing leadership, international experience and a wealth of knowledge to Utrecht’s squad.
