Ismaïl Saibari delivered a decisive performance on Wednesday night as PSV Eindhoven held Bayer Leverkusen to a 1-1 draw in their Champions League clash.
The Moroccan international, named UEFA’s Man of the Match, produced a moment of brilliance to salvage a vital point for the Dutch side.
The match at BayArena unfolded as a tense, closely contested battle, with both teams seeking to assert early dominance.
PSV created promising openings in the first half but struggled to find the finishing touch against Leverkusen’s compact defence.
The home side, buoyed by their supporters, gradually grew into the game and found the breakthrough midway through the second half.
Cameroonian forward Christian Kofane broke the deadlock in the 65th minute with a composed finish after a swift attacking move, giving Leverkusen a deserved lead.
The goal shifted the momentum firmly in their favour, forcing PSV to chase the game.
Saibari, however, seized control of the contest just eight minutes later. Linking up smartly with Guus Til on the edge of the box, the Moroccan midfielder unleashed a curling strike that flew beyond the goalkeeper into the top corner, levelling the score in the 73rd minute.
His goal not only restored parity but also reignited PSV’s confidence as they pushed forward in search of a winner.
Despite their late surge, the Dutch side could not find the decisive second goal. Leverkusen, too, squandered chances to claim all three points, leaving both clubs to settle for a share of the spoils.
The draw leaves PSV still chasing their first win in the group stage but offers encouragement ahead of their remaining fixtures. Saibari’s influential display once again underlined his growing importance to the team’s European ambitions.
