Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou named greatest goalkeeper in Al Hilal history
Al-Hilal icon Mohamed Al-Deayea has sparked widespread debate after declaring Moroccan star Yassine Bounou as the greatest goalkeeper in the history of Al Hilal, even placing him above his own legendary status.
The former Saudi international made the bold statement on Monday via social media platform X, sharing a video from Al Hilal’s King’s Cup triumph over Al Nassr, a final that also featured Cristiano Ronaldo.
Bounou’s decisive penalty shootout heroics in that match appeared to cement Al-Deayea’s admiration.
“Bono is the best goalkeeper in Al Hilal’s history,” Al-Deayea wrote, in a statement that quickly gained traction among fans and pundits alike.
Bounou joined Al Hilal in the summer of 2023 following his historic performances with Morocco at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, and has since transformed the club’s defensive stability. His arrival brought confidence and consistency between the posts, helping the Saudi giants maintain their dominance domestically.
Since making the move, the Moroccan international has built an impressive résumé, winning major honours including the Saudi Pro League, the King’s Cup, and the Saudi Super Cup.
His individual brilliance has also been recognised, earning him the CAF Goalkeeper of the Year title in 2025 for the second time. He further underlined his quality on the global stage at the FIFA Club World Cup, where he was named Man of the Match against Salzburg.
Al-Deayea’s comments have ignited lively discussions among supporters, with many praising Bounou’s impact while others urged caution in comparing eras.
“Honestly, Bounou is one of the best goalkeepers in the Saudi league and even in the Middle East. Any penalty given against Al Hilal, I wouldn’t be surprised if he saves it… The guy is a real guardian, and his technique in penalties is truly historic,” one fan reacted.
Another added, “If Bounou continues to shine and wins one or two titles, he’ll undoubtedly be an important and historic player for Al Hilal. But Mohammed Al-Deayea is one of those who built the club’s legacy and brought dozens of trophies.”
Given Al-Deayea’s stature as one of the most respected goalkeepers in Saudi and Asian football history, his endorsement carries significant weight.
His praise highlights just how influential Bounou has become at Al Hilal in a relatively short period, further cementing the Moroccan’s growing legacy at the club.
