Bayer Leverkusen have begun reassessing their short-term plans for Eliesse Ben Seghir as the Moroccan international’s difficult first months at the club continue to raise questions about his immediate role.

A combination of limited impact, disrupted rhythm and muted involvement at the Africa Cup of Nations has forced the Bundesliga side to review their options ahead of the winter transfer window.

Since arriving in Germany, Ben Seghir has struggled to translate promise into production. His appearances have been sporadic and largely inconclusive, offering little in the way of goals or assists.

That lack of tangible return has been mirrored by an adaptation process that has proven slower than anticipated, with the winger finding it challenging to impose himself in a league that demands high intensity, tactical discipline and consistency.

His international break did little to alter that narrative. Despite being named in Morocco’s AFCON squad, Ben Seghir did not make a single appearance during the tournament, spending the competition on the bench.

An ankle issue further clouded his situation, although medical assessments later confirmed the injury was not serious. From Leverkusen’s perspective, that reassurance on his fitness stands out as the only encouraging development from an otherwise unproductive spell.

At club level, the numbers underline the concern. Twelve outings across competitions have yielded no direct attacking contributions, and his influence within matches has steadily diminished.

As competition for places intensified, Ben Seghir gradually slipped out of the core rotation, prompting internal discussions about how best to protect both the player’s development and the club’s investment.

A loan move has therefore emerged as a realistic and increasingly attractive solution. Leverkusen believe a temporary departure during the second half of the season could provide Ben Seghir with the regular minutes and confidence he currently lacks.

Monaco are among the clubs monitoring the situation closely, encouraged by their prior knowledge of the player and open to a reunion, subject to medical clearance.
