The Royal Moroccan Football Federation has implemented major changes to the Atlas Lions’ technical team in a bid to revamp the national side ahead of the 2026 World Cup tournament, to be held in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Despite failing to clinch the AFCON 2025 title on home soil, the domestic football governing body has decided to renew confidence in head coach Walid Regragui, while ringing changes to the technical team in a bid to inject expertise into the team.
Africasoccer.com understands that the Moroccan FA has appointed Mohamed Wahbi as the new assistant trainer following the departure of one of the current assistants.
Mohamed Wahbi led the Moroccan U20 team to clinch the 2025 FIFA World Cup tournament, held in Chile last year. Their success saw them become the second Africa nation to secure the U20 World Cup after Ghana, who won the title in 2009 in Egypt.
Besides, the FA intends to utilize the expertise of consultants including Tariq Sektioui, Hussein Ammouta, Noureddine Naybet, and Nabil Baha.
Regragui led Morocco to the final of the Africa Cup of Nations on their home ground, but missed out on the ultimate title after narrow defeat to Senegal.
He has been coaching Morocco since August 2022 and led his country’s team to a historic achievement by securing fourth place in the 2022 World Cup.
The global showpiece, to be co-hosted by United States, Canada and Mexico will feature an expanded 48 countries, with Morocco securing one of Africa’s automatic nine slots for the tournament.
The North African powerhouse are paired in Group C alongside record World Cup winners, Brazil, European side, Scotland and Haiti.
Morocco will open their account at the global showpiece in a high-stake clash against Brazil, followed by Scotland. The Atlas Lions will wrap up their group game against Haiti.
