Moroccan defender Soufiane Bouftini set for AS FAR return after four seasons abroad

Moroccan defender Soufiane Bouftini set for AS FAR return after four seasons abroad

Soufiane Bouftini is on the verge of sealing a return to Moroccan football, with AS FAR reportedly finalising a deal to bring the experienced central defender back to the Botola Pro after four years overseas.

The 31-year-old Moroccan international is understood to have reached an agreement with the Rabat-based club, who are seeking to bolster their defensive options ahead of a possible CAF Champions League campaign next season.

Bouftini is expected to sign a two-year contract as the club positions itself for domestic and continental challenges.

Bouftini began his professional career with Hassania Agadir, where he established himself as a key figure in the Moroccan top flight.

His performances caught the attention of clubs abroad, and in 2021 he made the move to Qatar, joining Al-Ahli SC. After a season in the Qatari Stars League, he continued his journey in the Gulf region by signing with Al-Wasl in the United Arab Emirates.

During his three seasons in the UAE, Bouftini accumulated an impressive 98 appearances across all competitions, contributing 15 goals and two assists—a notable return for a centre-back.

His consistency and leadership at the back were widely recognised, making him a valued asset for his teams.

With his current contract at Al-Wasl set to run until June 2025, Bouftini’s decision to decline an extension has paved the way for a return to his home country.

Reports indicate that AS FAR, currently pushing for a strong finish in the league, acted quickly to secure his services and are now in pole position to complete the signing.

AS FAR’s interest in Bouftini reflects the club’s ambition to blend experience with emerging talent as they look to build a competitive squad for next season.

With their sights set on CAF Champions League qualification, the club’s management sees Bouftini’s leadership and continental experience as a natural fit for their long-term objectives.

The defender’s familiarity with Moroccan football is expected to ease his reintegration into the domestic scene.

Having already proven himself in Botola Pro with Hassania Agadir, Bouftini is expected to adapt quickly to AS FAR’s style and expectations.

Capped eight times by the Moroccan national team, with two goals to his name, Bouftini brings not only a wealth of club experience but also the maturity of international duty.

His return could also serve as a signal of intent by AS FAR, who are keen to reassert themselves among Morocco’s elite sides both at home and in Africa.

If the deal is finalised in the coming days, Bouftini will be one of the key signings of the Moroccan summer transfer window, bringing an end to a successful chapter abroad and beginning a new one in familiar surroundings.
