Moroccan Hussein Ammouta has entered the fray for the Saudi Arabia job ahead of the 2026 World Cup, despite the relative stability surrounding the Saudi national team under French head coach Hervé Renard.

Among the names being circulated, a Moroccan coach has emerged prominently, signalling what some see as a potential shift in direction aligned with the Green Falcons’ rising ambitions on the global stage.

Sports pundit and former Saudi Arabian Football Federation Referees’ Committee head Nabil Nakshbandi said there are several options under consideration, though he leans toward Moroccan coach Hussein Ammouta.

“There are several options currently on the table for the Saudi national team, but I am inclined towards appointing the Moroccan Hussein Ammouta.”

He also highlighted Ammouta’s success with Jordan.

Emphasis on Ammouta’s credentials was reinforced as Nakshbandi added: “Ammouta has excellent experience in coaching national teams; he performed brilliantly with the Jordanian national team, and I hope he takes charge of the Green Falcons.”

Media personality Emad Al-Salmi also endorsed Ammouta during an appearance on “Action with Walid”, joining growing calls for his appointment as national team coach.

It was further argued that the Moroccan coaching school has proven its quality at continental and international levels, with Walid Regragui also previously linked to the role.

While Hervé Renard remains in charge and continues to oversee preparations, growing internal discussion suggests the Saudi Football Federation is quietly evaluating succession options as it weighs long-term strategic direction ahead of the tournament.

The emergence of Moroccan candidates reflects a broader trend of North African coaches gaining prominence in Gulf football, where tactical organisation and discipline are increasingly prioritised.
