Monchi apologises to Espanyol fans after backing Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal for Ballon d’Or

Espanyol sporting director Monchi has apologised to the club’s supporters after choosing Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal as his preferred candidate for the Ballon d’Or.

Monchi made the choice around a week ago when asked to select between Kylian Mbappe, Harry Kane and Yamal. His decision caused anger among some Espanyol fans because of the intense rivalry between the two Catalan clubs.

Speaking to Cadena SER, Monchi explained that his selection reflected Yamal’s status as the Spanish candidate.

“I was asked to choose between Kylian Mbappe, Harry Kane and Lamine Yamal, and I chose Yamal because he is the Spanish option,” he said.

The comments led to controversy among Espanyol supporters, prompting Monchi to clarify his position and apologise to anyone who had been offended.

“That caused some debate among our fans. If anyone was upset, I apologise,” he said.

Monchi, who also described himself as an Espanyol supporter, said he could have selected another player but had not intended to show disrespect towards the club.

“Of course, as an Espanyol fan, I could have chosen someone else. I did not intend to offend anyone,” he said.

“I know what it means to be an Espanyol supporter. I have felt a sense of belonging to the club from the beginning, and if anyone felt offended, I apologise.”

Monchi concluded by saying that his decision was “like wearing the Spanish flag”, underlining that his choice was motivated by pride in Spain as well as his connection with Espanyol.
