Mandanda Reacts to Bielsa’s Shock Exit, Urges Marseille to Stay United
By BBC Sport
Olympique de Marseille captain Steve Mandanda has admitted he was caught off guard by Marcelo Bielsa’s abrupt resignation as head coach, echoing the confusion shared by many within the squad.
Speaking at a press conference on Friday, the experienced Franco-Congolese goalkeeper refrained from passing judgment on Bielsa’s decision, but expressed concern over the timing of the departure, which came just after the club’s opening-day defeat to Caen at the Stade Vélodrome.
“He explained his decision to me and to you,” Mandanda said. “There’s his version, there’s the president’s version — I’ll let you make your own judgment. For me, it’s more the timing that’s troubling. But that’s football.”
Bielsa, known for his intense and unpredictable nature, stepped down just hours after the loss, citing disagreements with the club’s management. The move left both players and supporters stunned, especially coming so early in the new season.
Despite the sudden upheaval, Mandanda made it clear that the squad must regroup quickly as they prepare for Sunday’s match away at Reims — a game that has now taken on added importance.
“We can’t allow ourselves to be discouraged,” the Marseille goalkeeper insisted. “We need to show solidarity and character. We have the ambition to win in Reims.”
Mandanda, now in his ninth season with the club, will play a key role in helping the team navigate this period of uncertainty. With Marseille already under pressure following their opening defeat, the trip to Reims offers a crucial opportunity to restore confidence and stability — both on the pitch and in the dressing room.
