AS Monaco have taken the tough but understandable decision to remove Paul Pogba from their Champions League squad just days before their play-off showdown with PSG on February 17.
The 2018 World Cup winner has been dogged by recurring injuries since joining the club last June and has managed only 30 minutes of action.
Pogba has been sidelined with a calf problem since December, and Monaco no longer felt they could rely on him for the crucial European tie. CEO Thiago Scuro admitted the situation remains uncertain when asked about a possible return date for the midfielder.
“There is no clear answer to that question,” he said, stressing that the club still need to “develop the process to clarify the situation.”
Scuro explained that, as with any long-term injury, Pogba must first get back onto the pitch, then gradually build up in training to regain full fitness before competing again.
The Frenchman is not alone: Mohammed Salisu was also removed from Monaco’s Champions League list due to injury, further limiting Adi Hütter’s options on the eve of a season-defining clash.
