Lacina Traoré Set for Monaco Return After Injury Layoff
BBC Sport Africa – Monaco
Ivorian striker Lacina Traoré is on the verge of making his long-awaited return for AS Monaco after a prolonged injury absence. The 24-year-old, who joined Monaco from Anzhi Makhachkala in January before being loaned to Everton, has yet to make an appearance this season — but that could change as early as this weekend.
Traoré, sidelined by a recurring hamstring injury since last season, has now returned to full training and is in contention to feature in Monaco’s Ligue 1 clash against Evian Thonon-Gaillard on Saturday.
Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, Monaco head coach Leonardo Jardim confirmed that the towering forward is nearing match fitness.
“Lacina Traoré is not ready to play a full match but could come on as early as Saturday,” said Jardim. “He is an interesting player with different qualities from our other strikers.”
His return could not come at a better time for the Principality club, who are struggling in front of goal this season. Monaco have found the net just eight times in nine league matches, placing them 13th in Ligue 1 for attacking output.
Traoré’s presence offers a much-needed physical and aerial dimension to Jardim’s attacking options, particularly with Dimitar Berbatov currently unavailable due to injury. The Bulgarian veteran has been Monaco’s key figure up front, and his absence has left a noticeable gap in the squad’s attacking thrust.
At 6ft 8in (2.03m), Traoré brings a unique profile to Monaco’s front line. Known for his strength, finishing ability, and aerial dominance, he was tipped for a major breakthrough in European football before his injury setbacks derailed momentum.
Although Jardim has made it clear that Traoré won’t start this weekend, his potential cameo could mark the beginning of a comeback both for the player and for a Monaco side that has struggled to replicate last season’s form.
With the club aiming to climb the Ligue 1 table and push for European qualification, a fully fit Lacina Traoré may prove vital in the weeks ahead.
