Mokwena questions Egypt call-ups for Pyramids defenders Marei and Sami

Pyramids FC head coach Rulani Mokwena has questioned the decision not to include defenders Mahmoud Marei and Ahmed Sami in the Egypt national team after praising their performances in the club’s 1-0 victory over Al Masry.

The South African coach was speaking after Pyramids secured their third consecutive win of the 2026/27 Egyptian Premier League season, a result that moved them to the top of the table.

Mokwena admitted the victory had been hard-fought, particularly against an Al Masry side Pyramids had struggled to beat in recent meetings.

“We played a very difficult match against Al Masry. I don’t remember the last time Pyramids beat Al Masry. We haven’t beaten them for a long time,” he told ON Sport.

He was particularly impressed with the performances of goalkeeper Ahmed El Shenawy and centre-backs Marei and Sami.

“I am very proud of the players’ performance. We saw Ahmed El Shenawy deliver an amazing performance because of his consistent level and he does not make any mistakes,” Mokwena said.

“Likewise, Mahmoud Marei and Ahmed Sami must be praised.”

Mokwena then questioned why the two defenders have not been selected for Egypt, arguing that they form the best defensive partnership in the Egyptian top flight.

“I don’t know why Marei and Sami don’t join the Egyptian national team. They are the best defensive duo in the league, and they possess outstanding defensive abilities and capabilities,” he said.

The Pyramids coach also singled out Morocco international Mohamed El Shiebi, describing him as “one of the best players in Africa”.

Mokwena reserved further praise for midfielder Mohannad Lasheen, suggesting the experienced player could have reached the highest level of European football if he were younger.

“If Mohannad Lasheen were younger, I think he could have played for Real Madrid. He is a player with special qualities,” he said.

Pyramids have made an impressive start to the new league campaign, winning all three of their opening matches.

However, Mokwena urged his players not to become complacent despite their perfect record.

“We must remain humble and continue to work. The journey is very long, and we have a very good team and top-level players,” he said.
