Mohannad Lasheen could have played for Real Madrid – Pyramids FC coach Rulani Mokwena

Pyramids FC head coach Rulani Mokwena believes midfielder Mohannad Lasheen has the quality to have played for Real Madrid, insisting the Egyptian international possesses “special qualities” despite suggesting age is the only factor that held him back.

The South African coach made the remark after Pyramids secured a hard-fought 1-0 away victory over Al Masry on Monday to maintain their perfect start to the Egyptian Premier League season.

The win marked Pyramids’ third consecutive league victory, keeping the reigning African champions at the top of the table with nine points.

Speaking after the match to Egyptian broadcaster ON Sports, Mokwena described the result as particularly significant given his side’s recent struggles against Al Masry.

“We played a very difficult match against Al Masry. I don’t remember the last time Pyramids beat Al Masry; we hadn’t beaten them for a long time,” he said.

Mokwena reserved special praise for two of his standout performers, Moroccan full-back Mohamed Chibi and defensive midfielder Lasheen.

“Mohamed Chibi is one of the best players on the African continent,” he said.

Turning his attention to Lasheen, the former Mamelodi Sundowns coach suggested the midfielder’s ability would have been enough to earn him a place at one of the world’s biggest clubs.

“If Mohannad Lasheen was younger, I think he could have played for Real Madrid. He is a player with special qualities,” Mokwena added.

Despite his team’s flawless start to the campaign, the 39-year-old urged his players to remain grounded.

“We must remain humble and continue working. The journey is very long, and we have a very good team and top-level players,” he said.
