Mohammed Sofo is concentrating on establishing himself with New York Red Bulls rather than looking too far ahead to a possible Ghana call-up.
The 21-year-old winger has attracted attention through his consistent performances in Major League Soccer, having made his 24th regular-season appearance of the campaign in Saturday’s 2-0 victory over Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami.
The match was played at Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison, New Jersey, where Sofo helped New York Red Bulls secure an important win.
Born in Accra, Sofo began his development at the JMG Academy in Mali before moving to Guidars FC. He joined New York Red Bulls II on loan in June 2023 and signed a contract with the club’s first team in September 2024.
His form has led to increasing expectations that he could earn a first senior international call-up for Ghana. However, the forward has opted not to focus on that possibility, instead placing his immediate priority on producing regularly for his club.
Sofo discussed his situation in an interview with Footy-Africa and also welcomed the international progress of team-mate Ronald Donkora, who reached that milestone during Ghana’s most recent September international break by earning his first cap.
While Donkora has already made his debut for the Black Stars, Sofo remains focused on continuing his development in the United States and contributing to New York Red Bulls.
The Ghanaian has scored one goal and provided one assist for RB New York this season. His contract runs until the end of 2026.
Sofo’s current market value is estimated at one million euros.
