Mohammed Al-Owais makes Gulf Cup history as Saudi Arabia claim fourth title

Mohammed Al-Owais has become only the fifth goalkeeper in Gulf Cup history to complete an entire edition without conceding a goal, after helping Saudi Arabia win Gulf Cup 27.

Al-Owais kept a clean sheet throughout the tournament, according to Asharq Al-Awsat, and completed a rare double by combining that defensive achievement with winning the trophy.

Only two goalkeepers had previously managed both accomplishments in the competition: Kuwait’s Ahmed Al-Tarabulsi and Oman’s Ali Al-Habsi.

Saudi Arabia secured the title by beating the United Arab Emirates 2-0, claiming the Gulf Cup for the fourth time in their history. The victory also ensured the Saudi side finished the tournament unbeaten.

Saudi Arabia are the third team to win the competition without conceding a goal, following Kuwait and Oman.

Al-Owais’ record adds an individual milestone to Saudi Arabia’s wider success, with the goalkeeper playing a central role in a campaign that ended with the national side lifting the trophy and maintaining a perfect defensive record.
