Mohamed Salah silences Wayne Rooney with historic Premier League record
Mohamed Salah answered his critics in the most convincing way by writing a new piece of Premier League history during Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Brighton at Anfield.
After starting on the bench again, the Egyptian star was called into action early in the 26th minute when Joe Gomez went off injured, giving him a much longer run than in recent matches.
Salah then left his mark on the game on the hour, delivering a precise corner that Hugo Ekitiké headed in for Liverpool’s second goal. According to Squawka, that contribution meant Salah surpassed Wayne Rooney’s long-standing record for most goal involvements with a single club in Premier League history. The Liverpool forward has now been involved in 277 league goals for the Reds, overtaking Rooney’s 276 with Manchester United.
The 33-year-old reached this milestone in 302 league appearances, scoring 188 goals and providing 89 assists for Liverpool. The achievement comes just days after Rooney publicly criticised Salah and suggested new coach Arne Slot should keep him on the bench, remarks that fuelled an already tense situation between the player, his manager and the club.
Salah had openly expressed his anger over being benched for three straight games, clashing with Slot and the Liverpool hierarchy in the media. Against Brighton, however, he responded where it matters most for supporters, helping his team win and dislodging one of the Premier League’s greatest names from a historic throne.
