Mohamed Salah opens door to Saudi move

Liverpool star Mohamed Salah has softened his stance on a potential move to the Saudi Professional League, with negotiations now said to be in their early stages ahead of the summer transfer window.

Despite enjoying remarkable collective and individual success since joining Liverpool in 2017, the Egyptian forward is currently experiencing a challenging spell at Anfield.

His situation became more complicated following the well-publicised controversy surrounding his comments about the Dutch coach and the club’s management prior to his departure for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Salah’s on-field output has also dipped this season when compared to previous campaigns. The forward has managed just four goals in 17 English Premier League appearances, a return that has fuelled growing debate about his future, particularly with his contract set to expire at the end of next season.

This context has revived speculation linking Salah with a move to the Saudi Professional League, a destination that has already attracted high-profile names such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and Riyad Mahrez. Al-Ittihad were first linked with the Egyptian star more than two years ago, but Salah put an end to the rumours at the time by committing his future to Liverpool with a contract renewal.

However, the narrative appears to have shifted. According to French transfer news outlet Foot Mercato, the Pharaohs’ captain is now open to the idea of joining Al-Ittihad next summer. The report adds that Salah’s agent, Ramy Abbas, has already begun discussions with federation officials regarding the proposed move.

While Foot Mercato did not reveal the financial details of the negotiations, previous reports from Sky Sports indicated that Al-Ittihad had tabled a record-breaking offer worth more than £200 million during earlier attempts to lure the Liverpool star.

Al-Ittihad’s renewed interest comes at a time of transition for the Saudi giants. The club recently lost two French stars during the winter transfer window, with Karim Benzema moving to Al-Hilal and N’Golo Kanté joining Fenerbahçe. Fabinho’s contract is set to expire next June, while Moussa Diaby has been linked with a potential switch to Inter Milan.

With squad reinforcement now a priority as they look to remain competitive for major honours, the signing of Mohamed Salah would represent the statement acquisition Al-Ittihad have long been targeting.
