Mohamed Salah took a step closer to history on October 5, contributing two assists in Liverpool’s 4-0 Champions League win over Bayer Leverkusen. The Egyptian forward’s impressive performance highlighted his growing influence in the prestigious European competition and moved him within reach of a major African record.

In a match that required a strong second-half response, Salah was pivotal, setting up two goals that allowed Liverpool to decisively take control.

His contributions not only sealed the Reds’ victory but also bolstered Salah’s standing as one of the top African playmakers in Champions League history.

After a scoreless first half, Liverpool came out determined to break through Bayer Leverkusen’s defense.

Salah, initially struggling to find his rhythm, quickly turned things around in the second half, showcasing his skill and vision.

His first assist came with a pinpoint cross that found Cody Gakpo, who slotted it in to give Liverpool a 1-0 lead.

This crucial breakthrough set the tone for the rest of the match.

Later, Salah produced another precise pass late in the game, contributing directly to Liverpool’s second goal.

He was also involved in the build-up to the third, helping to cement the club’s dominance and secure the crucial three points.

With these latest assists, Salah has now amassed 17 Champions League assists, moving ahead of Moroccan playmaker Hakim Ziyech, who sits at 15, and Algerian winger Riyad Mahrez with 16.

Salah now holds third place among African players with the most assists in Champions League history, according to statistics from Onze Masr.

Salah’s current tally places him just three assists behind Samuel Eto’o, the former Cameroonian striker who remains the top African assist provider in Champions League history with 20 assists.

With Liverpool still active in this season’s competition, Salah has a strong chance to surpass Eto’o’s record, adding another milestone to his illustrious career.

At 32, Salah continues to be a key figure in Liverpool’s squad and one of the most influential African players on the global stage.

His consistent performances underscore not only his technical abilities but also his commitment to breaking new ground in European football.

His contributions have earned him a prominent place among Africa’s all-time greats in the Champions League, both as a goal-scorer and a provider.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp praised Salah’s efforts, noting that his vision and precision have been instrumental in the club’s European success.

Champions League: Mohamed Salah threatens Samuel Eto'o

Salah’s impact on the game goes beyond goals.

He’s someone who lifts the entire team, always creating opportunities for his teammates,” Klopp said.

As Liverpool advances in this Champions League campaign, Salah remains central to the club’s ambitions.

His pursuit of Eto’o’s record adds another layer of excitement for fans, who eagerly watch as he approaches this major achievement.

If Salah’s form continues, the Egyptian captain may soon stand alone as the top African assist provider in Champions League history, further solidifying his legacy in both Liverpool and African football.
