Former Liverpool striker Dean Saunders has questioned why Salah chose Trabzonspor when he could have pursued a move to a more financially powerful club or remained at Liverpool.

“I’m stunned,” Saunders said on talkSPORT. “What has Mo Salah done? This is no disrespect, because I went to Galatasaray. Turkey, my son was born there.

“I had a great time in Turkey and they are all enthusiastic, nice people. Trabzonspor are a big club in Turkey, but why on earth has Mo Salah left Liverpool to go there?”

Saunders admitted he expected Salah to head to Saudi Arabia, where Al Ittihad had shown interest and could have offered him a bigger salary.

“Without sounding like I’m criticizing Trabzon, I am finding it hard to believe. Why didn’t he stay at Liverpool? I honestly thought he would be going to Saudi Arabia.”

Why Salah chose a different path

Salah still had a contract with Liverpool until 2027, but both parties agreed that the time had come to separate after an extraordinary spell in England.

The Saudi option offered greater financial rewards, yet Salah ultimately chose to remain in Europe and continue his career in a competitive environment.

Saunders believes the Egyptian’s final season at Liverpool should also be viewed in context rather than interpreted as evidence of decline.

“There was mitigating circumstances in his season last season,” he said. “It wasn’t all down to him. He lost most of his supply from Trent; his disguised passing got Salah in on goal.”

The former striker also pointed to the instability around Liverpool’s right side and the departure of Luis Diaz as factors that affected Salah’s output.

“He’s played with eight different right-backs last season. Luis Diaz used to cross it for him and he’s gone.”
